Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Scot Laing

A HISTORY BUFF, Scot Laing would like to trade places with Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King or Ronald Reagan. A HISTORY BUFF, Scot Laing would like to trade places with Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King or Ronald Reagan. Name: Scot Laing.

Town or township of residence: Cleveland Township.

Resident of county since: 1999. I designed and built my dream log home after living on Old Mission Peninsula for eight years.

Age and birthplace: I’m 63, I was born in Augusta, Ga., and moved to Detroit when I was 4.

Occupation: I’m retired and enjoying my hobby of photography. I do weddings and portraits, with my real love being landscape.

Marital status: Married to Rose (McNeil) from Lake Leelanau. We met when we both worked at Sugar Loaf in 1992.

You live in Leelanau County because: What? Do you know of a better place? I sure haven’t found it yet.

Last good movie you saw: “Ben Hur.” I don’t have the best hearing and they now have closed caption glasses to wear, so that was a great experience for me.

Last good book you read: I’m almost done with “Becoming Amish,” by my friend Jeff Smith, who is a local also. Very interesting read about a family’s transition into the Amish lifestyle.

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: I have always loved American history, so someone like Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King or Ronald Reagan. Or perhaps an inventor like Thomas Edison to see how a smart guy thinks, cause I sure don’t know how.

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: To provide love and help for my parents. My father passed away this spring, but my mom is still living. I know that I couldn’t possibly do for them what they’ve done for me, but I try.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: Why wait 10 years? There are many places to see, but in particular I would like to go live in Ireland for a year. Rose and I were there and I felt like I was home, and I need to explore it more.

Things you lose sleep over: I am very concerned about where our country is heading and can’t believe we have to choose between these two candidates in November.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: I would like to get my hands on some magic dust and sprinkle it over Sugar Loaf to bring it back to its glory days. So many wonderful memories of years past and so sad to see it rot away.

Favorite dessert: I do have a sweet tooth for cookies and cakes, especially with chocolate and peanut butter.

Are you a coffee drinker: It’s funny, one of my favorite aromas has always been that of coffee, but I didn’t start drinking it until recently. My wife taught me to take it with a little milk.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: Being into landscape photography, it is so hard to pick just one spot. So many amazing views! I do enjoy our house in the woods very much also.

If you had more time you would: I don’t have time to think if I had more time.

The words that best describe you are: Good sense of humor, curious, concerned and emotional.
