Weaver charged with having child porn

A 30-year-old Traverse City man is facing more felony charges after sexually abusive material of children was allegedly found on his cell phone.

Robert S. Weaver II, 30, was arraigned in 86th District Court on Tuesday on charges of possession of child sexually abusive material, a four-year felony, and using a computer to commit a crime, a seven-year felony.

A ‘not guilty’ plea on both charges was entered for Weaver.

Weaver has been in the Leelanau County Jail since June, when he allegedly went into his parents’ Leelanau Township home and made threats to kill his father and then struck him several times. He is also accused of taking a phone away from his mother when she tried to make a phone call.

Police confiscated Weaver’s cell phone after that incident. The child sexually abusive material was allegedly found when it was analyzed.

Weaver is facing two felony charges of home invasion, second degree, and interfering with electronic communications in connection with the June incident. He is also facing misdemeanor charges of aggravated domestic violence and malicious destruction of personal property less than $200.

Weaver was sent for a competency exam in June and was found competent to stand trial, according to his Traverse City attorney James Hunt.

Weaver is currently being held on two 10 percent, $50,000 bonds.

A probable cause conference on the new charges has been set for Oct. 25, and a preliminary examination for Nov. 1.
