Two nurses added to department staff

BURNS BURNS Two nurses have been hired by the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department.

Roberta (Birdie) Besey works primarily in Benzie County while Stephanie Burns works at the Connie Binsfeld Resource Center in Lake Leelanau.

“Our nurses have been working at maximum capacity for several years,” said Michelle Klein, director of personnel health for the two-county department. “Several opportunities developed in 2016 that will increase our services for the community.”

One development has been the department’s ability to bill private insurance for services.

“Having this allows us to provide services to everyone in the community — both insured and uninsured,” Klein said.

Some services include immunizations and reproductive health services such as pap smears, mammograms, birth control, STD testing and treatment.

The nurses are also available to provide free, rapid HIV testing with results available in 20 minutes, a tobacco cessation program and a “Wise Choices” program that provides coaching to help reproductive health clients reduce their risk of heart disease.

BESEY BESEY In addition, next year a diabetes prevention program is scheduled to be implemented in Benzie County.

And in Leelanau County, a “Healthy Futures” program will be enhanced to offer home visits to Leelanau County mothers who deliver at Munson, with free visits from nurse and a lactation consultant.
