Arts, students and golf course get grants

The Leelanau Township Community Foundation has allowed $27,900 in grants to local community groups.

Those grants were for:

$15,000 to Northport Village for construction and development of a driving range and practice facility at the Northport Creek Golf Course.

$4,000 to the Northport Arts Association to help fund the recent Leelanau Uncaged festival.

$4,450 to the Leelanau Children’s Center for Leelanau Township student scholarships.

$4,450 to the Northport Community Arts Center to provide support to carry out its mission and programming.

$1,500 to provide ‘camperships’ for Leelanau Township youth to attend Shady Trails Camp. The grant was approved by the foundation’s Youth Advisory Council, made up of Northport High School students.

In addition, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees recently welcomed three new members. They are Kristi Hallett of Omena, and Shirley Beardslee and Barbara McCann, both of Northport.

Officers were also elected, with Kathy Gartha voted to serve as board chair; Bill Collins, vice chair; Dick Koenig, treasurer; and McCann as secretary.

The foundation was established in 1945 by Francis Haserot with a $35,000 gift in memory of his business partner, G. Marsten Dame. Since then more than $3.5 million to support community projects has been given out as well as numerous scholarships to graduates of local high schools.
