Kelly’s hand missing in budget work

The Elmwood Township Board will begin working on a budget for the new fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2017 without the help of township Supervisor Jack Kelly and Trustee Mary Barrows.

Kelly opted not to run for a third four-year term as supervisor will be replaced by Jeff Shaw on Nov. 20. Barrows lost her seat in the August Primary to former trustee and now trustee-elect James O’Rourke.

At the board’s regular monthly meeting on Nov. 14, officials and members of the public in attendance expressed their gratitude to Kelly and Barrows for their service, and thanked them for all their hard work over the years.

The new Township Board will meet for the first time in a special session on Nov. 29 to begin a series of budget work sessions. At the same meeting, the board will also discuss a Greilickville Water Rate Analysis that was completed recently by township engineer Brian Sousa of the Wade Trim engineering firm.

There are 76 customers on the Greilickville community water system, most of them commercial. Sousa has recommended increasing the amount charged to customers by 2.5-percent to keep the system in the black financially in the years ahead.

The base rate currently charged by customers is $21 per month. The topic will be discussed at the Nov. 29 meeting because Sousa was away at deer camp the evening of Nov. 14.
