Alcohol suspected in 2 Elmwood incidents

A 20-year-old Traverse City man was arrested for drunken driving after he backed his vehicle up a little too far and went into a ditch.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call at about 7:10 p.m. Friday after someone called 9-1-1 to report a 2009 Honda in the ditch near the 7300 block of East Lakeview Hills Road in Elmwood Township.

An investigation determined the driver was backing out of a driveway when the vehicle went too far and ended up off the road. After observing signs that the driver may have been intoxicated, the deputy gave him a series of field sobriety tests.

After determining the man was indeed drunk, he was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and was taken to the Leelanau County Jail.

A 23-year-old Elmwood Township man was seriously injured at about 11:30 p.m. Friday when he lost control of his vehicle and rolled over.

When sheriff’s deputies and Elmwood fire and rescue personnel arrived on scene they found a red 2004 GMC pick-up off the side of East Cherry Bend Road near Center Highway with the 23-year-old driver trapped inside.

An investigation showed the man was heading east on East Cherry Bend Road when he lost control of the pickup, crossed over and left the pavement on the opposite side of the road and rolled over, striking several trees.

Emergency crews from worked for nearly two hours to extricate the driver, who was transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries to his lower extremities.

Vehicle speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
