Santa to visit at Hilltoppers; arts and crafts in Provemont

Santa has another busy weekend planned in Leelanau County. He’ll be at the Cedar Hilltoppers’ Clubhouse on Sunday, where he’ll be passing out snacks and presents for every good child, which, of course, includes all of them.

Everyone is welcome to attend the annual event being held from 1-3:30 p.m. at the clubhouse located at 7949 S. Schomberg Road in Cedar.

Santa is expected to make an appearance at 2 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Hilltoppers Snowmobile Club and the Cedar Chamber of Commerce.

Santa’s Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Leland Public School cafeteria, where the Class of 2017 will be on hand to help kids make Christmas-themed crafts or a gift for someone special.

This is the fourth year the Class of 2017 will host the event, and in a tradition that started several years ago, will hand it off to the Class of 2021, who will have it for the next four years, until they graduate.

The fundraiser has been held every year since 1984 and usually nets about $500 to $600 which goes toward the senior trip, said Kim Fowler, a special education teacher and a senior class advisor.

“It’s a really cool fundraiser for the kids,” Fowler said.

The event includes a Santa store, cake walk, face painting and games, as well as a craft fair featuring local artisans.

Warm food will also be for sale including hot dogs, chili, soup, fresh baked goods and hot chocolate.

Tickets to create crafts are $1 each. Gift wrapping is also available.

Also on Saturday will be the 5th annual Provemont Holiday Arts & Craft Show being held from10 a.m to 4 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Lake Leelanau.

The show features unique items that showcase the artistic talents of the people of the Leelanau peninsula. All of the items are handcrafted, including jewelry, soaps and hand-knit or sewn items. Lunch will also be offered.

The event is hosted by the Lake Leelanau Community Association.
