Eagles excited to wipe slate clean

To coach Clint Couturier, St. Mary basketball players have done all the right things since their 0-19 season ended in March.

“I tell you what — the boys put some time in this summer,” Couturier said. “They went to camps, went to open gyms and put time in on their own. It’s been fun.”

A fresh start may be just what the doctor ordered in Lake Leelanau, where four Eagles return to the starting lineup.

Leading the way is senior and thirdyear starter Chris Kohler, Couturier said.

“He was just our anchor, our MVP last year,” Couturier said. “What he does doesn’t show up in the stat box. The kid just brings it every day. And Ryan Popp — I don’t now what’s gotten into this kid but he wants to make some noise his senior year. He’s come a long way.”

Other returners are Avery Kohler, Harrison Schaub, Austin Tarsa and Andrew Tondrea. Newcomers this year are Shawn Grant and Cody Campbell.

Couturier is optimistic.

“I think we’re going to make inroads into the conference this year,” he said.
