Hursey, Norsemen ready to score

Thomas Hursey and the Suttons Bay boys have big shoes to fill this season.

The Norsemen will have a tough time replacing senior swingman Trevor Petroskey, last year’s Dream Team MVP, but four returning starters and plenty of height in the paint should give Suttons Bay a chance to hang with the Northwest Conference elite.

“We look forward to competing,” said sixth-year coach Ron Anderson. “That’s the biggest thing we want to do this year. We want to be a contender in the conference and I don’t think a lot of teams are looking at us in that fashion but on our end, that’s what we’re shooting for. I always tell the boys that a conference championship is the first championship you can win.”

The team will lean on Hursey, a sharpshooter who put up 14.4 points per game last season. The junior guard can seemingly shoot from anywhere.

Just ask Anderson.

“The only place I haven’t seen him shoot from is the opposite baseline,” Anderson said with a laugh.

Others returning to the starting lineup are Evan Busby, Justin McSawby and Brett Rice. Others, like Garrett Keith and Garrett Shananaquet, will give Anderson options as the season rolls along.

One area of emphasis for Anderson this year, in addition to quality possessions and shot selection, is defensive tenacity.

“I always classify defense as all heart,” he said. “That’s what carries you to championships.”
