Miller lone returning starter for Leland

There’s nothing easy about replacing eight seniors from a single basketball team, but Leland coach Jon Kiessel has been tasked with doing exactly that.

The Comets, who finished 9-12 (3-11 Northwest) a year ago, not only have to replace eight seniors, but also their leading scorer: Jamie McFarlane, who poured in 15.5 points per game last year.

“It’s different, but watching them learn throughout the year will be impressive,” Kiessel said. “Our strength will be our energy, our defense and our willingness to keep going. We’ve got a lot to learn and it will never be easy.”

The team opened the 2016-17 campaign this week with just six players in uniform, although all-county returner Garett Miller was one of them.

Miller, a junior guard, was a scoring machine for the Comets in their debut, netting 26 points. He’ll be relied upon for offensive production and leadership while new starters get comfortable at the varsity level.
