Outside hitters lead all-county Dream Team

How many high school volleyball players can say they’ve had a chance to learn from the best player in the country at their position? Not many, but Leland’s Ella Siddall is one of them.

Siddall, a setter, had a handful of opportunities to work with Team USA star Alisha Glass in 2016 — and she certainly made the most of them.

“She talked a lot of strategy with me,” said Siddall, a sophomore who distributed 1,160 assists for the Comets this season. “It was awesome.”

Siddall is one of four Comets and seven peninsula players voted to the 2016 Volleyball Dream Team by county coaches and the Enterprise sports staff. Leland teammates joining Siddall on the all-county club are Allie Martin, Rowan Wilson and Julie Bardenhagen.

Bardenhagen, a senior libero, led Leland in digs this season with 561 — including 27 in the team’s semifinal loss to Plymouth Christian last month.

The 27-dig effort tied a Class D finals record set by Glass in 2006.

“Julie was our cerebral leader,” said coach Laurie Glass, Alisha’s mom. “She understands the game and where her teammates need to be at all times. She will be sorely missed next year.”

Martin, meanwhile, was the statistical leader for Leland (42-11-4) this fall. The sophomore outside hitter had 116 aces, 554 kills and 507 digs.

Wilson had her share of big swings, as well. The junior finished with 48 aces, 396 kills and 504 digs.

This year’s all-star team also features a formidable pair of outside hitters from Suttons Bay, seniors Taylor Devol and Kyra Vezina.

Vezina, who recently signed her national letter of intent to play at Lake Superior State, racked up 245 kills for the Norse (20-10-6) in 2016.

“Win or lose, I was proud to have a Suttons Bay jersey on Kyra,” said first-year coach Kelly Mokanyk.

Devol was the other half of the dynamic duo, tallying 245 kills.

Rounding out the list of all-county performers is Glen Lake outside hitter Mallory Lund. Lund was a consistent contributor for the Lakers (13-22-4) in her third season as a starter, as evidenced by her 213 kills and 236 digs.
