DRIVERS OF BOTH of these vehicles were sent to the hospital when one driver lost control on icy roads, crossed the centerline and hit the other vehicle head on. Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies were kept busy policing several traffic crashes due to slippery road conditions, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.

Most of the accidents did not involve injuries. One did.

At about 11 a.m. Sunday, deputies along with Leland Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a two-vehicle head-on collision on North Manitou Trail north of Oxford Drive in Leland Township.

Emergency personnel found two vehicles with heavy front-end damage and two injured drivers.

The investigation showed that a 19-year-old woman from Tinley Park, Ill., was driving a 2000 Lexus northbound on North Manitou Trail when she lost control of her vehicle. The Lexus crossed over the center line and struck a 2004 Hyundai driven by a 65-year-old Leland man head on.

Both drivers were injured and transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.
