Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Bradley Chaplin

BRADLEY CHAPLIN is settling in as the new director of the Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library. BRADLEY CHAPLIN is settling in as the new director of the Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library. Name: Bradley Chaplin

Town or township of residence: Elmwood Township.

Resident of county since: We moved here in October 2015 from Traverse City’s central neighborhood.

Age and birthplace: Age 50; born in Cadillac.

Occupation: Director of the Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library.

Marital status (including children): I’m married to Jill. We have two children, ages 23 and 19.

You live in Leelanau County because: We acquired some property on Cedar Lake in Elmwood Township in 2000 and eventually realized what a gem we had, so we decided to build a home there where we’ve lived since 2015.

Last good movie you saw: It was a whole movie series we streamed on TV called “The Crown,” about the life of Queen Elizabeth. I’m kind of an Anglophile because my mom is from England. And, yes, I’m a very distant blood relative of Charlie Chaplin.

Last good book you read: “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson. It’s about the sinking of the British ocean liner Lusitania in World War I.

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: Any famous rock star – take your pick. I would just love to see what it’s like to be under the lights up there on stage and performing at a rock concert.

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: I convinced my wife to marry me. Also, earning my master’s degree in Library and Information Science was an important accomplishment for me.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: I hope to be retired, doing things like golfing and traveling.

Things you lose sleep over: I’m pretty good at compartmentalizing my worries. I did lose a little sleep over the decision to leave my last job to take a new job in Suttons Bay. I enjoyed my old job, had a lot of fun doing it, and worried about leaving people behind.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County it would be: I wish we could make changes that would attract more families with young children here because it would help our schools, our library and so much more. That could mean making more affordable housing available here, or more well-paying jobs – whatever it takes.

Favorite dessert: I make a mean English trifle (a layered cake with fruit and custard).

Are you a coffee drinker: Yes. I like it dark and muddy with a little cream. Nothing fancy.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: The Suttons Bay- Bingham District Library, of course. Pyramid Point is a close second.

If you had more time you would: Read more.

The words that best describe you are: Humorous, dedicated to my job; and extremely curious.
