Santa Claus kicked off the Christmas weekend in style at the Omena Community Room on Christmas Eve. Lots of kids – young and old – were there to sing carols, give Santa their final wish list, and have some fun. Many thanks to the members of Omena’s Club 21 for hosting Santa’s visit every year.

Monday’s spring-like weather was a gift to some, but not to all. Several families arriving in Omena for the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s were disappointed that all of the December snow that they had heard about was gone. We registered 50 degrees at our house for much of Monday afternoon. Our ability to get out and enjoy it was somewhat offset by the gale force winds that were bringing in a fresh batch of winter weather.

SANTA WAVES hello to Omena before visiting at the township fire hall. SANTA WAVES hello to Omena before visiting at the township fire hall. I was using the term “gale force” somewhat loosely and decided to check it out before putting in print. It turns out, I was pretty accurate. The National Weather Service defines a gale as sustained winds of between 39 and 54 miles per hour, which I am quite sure we had. The weather reported that Leland had gusts of 60 miles per hour on Monday. The most common way of measuring winds is with the Beaufort Wind Force Scale, which is an empirical measure for describing wind speed based mainly on observed sea conditions. On the Beaufort Scale, a gale is in between a “Strong Breeze” and a “Violent Storm”.

Lots of people were in Omena for the holidays. The Kennedy and Deibel households enjoyed family in town for Christmas. The Krusel family from Birmingham, Mich., the Fitzgerald family from Chicago, and Mike and Laurie Adelson from Brighton, all came up for the holiday week.

Scott Walker’s sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Bob Angerman of Plainwell, visited Ruth and Scott for the holiday. They enjoyed a weekend of relaxing, playing games and culinary exploits. They tested Pat and Bob’s pressure cooker with a seafood boil one night, risotto the next, and then on Christmas Day melted chocolate for a chocolate salame — a Nigella Lawson recipe. One of the games they played was a new one for me — Cards Against Humanity. I had to Google it to learn that it is a hilarious, but ‘politically incorrect’, game. The rules don’t even tell you how to win. The object is just to have fun.

Of course, the Walker’s black lab and Omena Village Council member, Brit, got spoiled with a new harness that holds a GoPro camera that allows shooting a dog’s eye view of the world. Maybe he’ll send some shots in to the Omena News.
