Northport woman charged with driving ‘super’ drunk

COOPER COOPER A 26-year-old Northport woman pleaded not guilty in 86th District Court on Tuesday to two drunken driving charges after going off the road in Leelanau Township and hitting a tree with two young children in the vehicle.

Whitney N. Cooper, of 5717 N. Overlook Road, was arraigned on charges of ‘super’ drunken driving and drunken driving with an occupant less than 16 years old. She had also taken prescription medications, the report said.

The charges stem from an incident at about 1:45 p.m. Jan. 6, in which Cooper allegedly lost control of her car on Omena Point Road after a deer ran out in front of her, according to a report from the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office. She then slid off the road and hit a tree, the report said.

Her 7- and 8-year-old sons were in the back seat of her black Chevrolet Suburban, the report said. One of the children was injured, the report said.

Both were released to their grandmother and Cooper was transported to Munson Medical Center.

Cooper’s alcohol content was greater than .17 percent, according to a court report.

Cooper is requesting a court-appointed attorney; her pretrial conference has been set for Jan. 31.

Both of the charges she is facing are misdemeanors.
