Controversial boathouse along Leland River was never built

In 2015 several Leland residents were up-in-arms over another boathouse that had been approved by the DEQ for construction on the Leland River.

The boathouse was to be 24-feet long by 18-feet wide and 25 feet high, but was never built.

Neighbors spoke out against the project, which spurred township planners to create a zoning ordinance to regulate boathouses in an overlay district — the Leland River Area — that goes from the mouth of the Leland River in Lake Leelanau to the end of the river at Lake Michigan.

The district does not include the Narrows.
