‘Shameful’ restrictions on immigration

To the editor:

I am particularly concerned with President Trump’s immigration restrictions as a retired American diplomat whose job was to persuade non-Americans to understand and, hopefully, agree with American foreign policy. Had I have been on duty overseas last week, I would have felt that the rug had been pulled out from under me. I was part of the rigorous vetting of potential immigrants, I extolled American virtues of religious freedom and the fact that I came from a nation of immigrants, and facilitated international student exchange programs. Most hurtful was the pause in immigration programs for foreign nationals who risked their lives to work for us. They and their families lives have been jeopardized. This is shameful!
