Elmwood a test for new containers

THESE NEW, red recycling containers are expected to arrive at the Elmwood Township recycling site next week. THESE NEW, red recycling containers are expected to arrive at the Elmwood Township recycling site next week. Leelanau County through its Solid Waste Council will soon be making changes at the Elmwood Township recycling site.

The green containers that have occupied the site for years are being replaced with new, red containers designed to be more user friendly for residents with ease of accessibility.

Elmwood Township is being used as a pilot for the new containers, which may be placed at other recycling sites in the county later this year, according to Trudy Galla, director of planning and community development.

The containers are designed in a more efficient way that allows the containers to be emptied on a scheduled basis, and also reduces the carbon footprint for the future.

The smaller, red containers will appear at the Elmwood Township site next week.

County households can still recycle the same materials with these red containers, such as: paper, newspaper, cardboard, plastics, tin/metal, and glass.

Citizens are reminded that materials are not to be left on the ground at any site. If containers are full, do not overload them. Instead, take materials to another site or return on a different day.

Use of the recycling containers is limited to households in Leelanau County.

Businesses need to contact local haulers to arrange for pickup.
