Northport man faces third charge of domestic violence

SOUTHBIRD SOUTHBIRD A 23-year-old Northport man was video arraigned in 86th District Court on Tuesday on a felony charge of domestic violence after assaulting his father on Valentine’s Day.

Julio A. Southbird, of 10635 N. Foxview Dr., is being held in the Leelanau County Jail on a $50,000 cash surety bond.

The charge stems from a Feb. 14 incident in which Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies and Tribal Police were called to Southbird’s Leelanau Township home at about 11:30 p.m. for a fight.

When they arrived, they found that Southbird’s 61-year-old father had injuries to his face. The father told police that Southbird had been fighting with his 22-year-old brother and when the father tried to break it up, Southbird hit him in the face, according to a court report.

He was arrested on the domestic assault charge, as well as for a probation violation.

Southbird has been convicted of domestic violence on at least two previous occasions. If convicted of the latest charge, Southbird faces up to five years in prison along with fines of up to $5,000.

His probable cause conference has been set for Feb. 28, and a preliminary examination on the charges has been set for March 7.
