Weather perfect for Winter Carnival

Planners of the Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce Winter Carnival held Saturday at Braman Hill were hoping there would be a little snow left for cardboard sled races after a string of warm days.

There was, but barely.

Temperatures on Saturday reached into the 50s with sunny skies that made things a little sloppy, but brought out crowds of people.

“I am delighted,” said Scott Cain, chairperson of the event. “We couldn’t have had better weather. We had snow, we had ice, and yet it was warm and sunny.”

Winners of the chili contest were Jim Scougale, traditional category; Bonnie Shiner, white chili; Bob Coohan, offbeat chili; and Rebecca Van Pelt for her five-alarm recipe.

Terry Groesser of Omena was the winner of the raffle, taking home prizes and gift certificates worth between $400 and $600, Cain said.

“The merchants were very generous and it was all for things you can get here in Northport or Omena,” Cain said.

Northport students in grades k-12 participated in the sled races, with the 11th grade named the overall winner. The broomball competition was won by the Dobis Public Relations team, and the milk jug curling contest by the Trapper Ron North team.
