Heard around Leelanau

“My Leelanau, you taught me the value of

Looking out to seek a pleasant peninsula, and

Looking up, looking down, noticing who and what has come before.

Instilling in me the need to conserve.

Our Leelanau.”

— A poem by Julie Weeks, who died this week after battling cancer. She had a successful career in the non-profit field before running her own business from her home in Leelanau County, and most recently was heavily involved in promoting the county through the Leelanau Peninsula Economic Foundation. She is also the daughter of long-time Glen Haven resident George Weeks, a syndicated columnist and former press secretary for Gov. William Milliken.
