Northport man pleads ‘not guilty’ for felony domestic violence

SOUTHBIRD SOUTHBIRD A 23-year-old Northport man waived his preliminary examination in 86th District Court on Tuesday and was bound over to Circuit Court.

He entered a plea of not guilty on a charge of domestic violence, third offense, which is a felony.

Julio A. Southbird, of 10635 N. Foxview Dr., also pleaded guilty to a charge of contempt of court for failure to pay fines and costs on a previous conviction of domestic violence.

Southbird is accused of assaulting his father on Valentine’s Day, according to court reports. He is currently being held in the Leelanau County Jail on a $50,000 cash surety bond.

The charge stems from an incident in which Southbird allegedly assaulted his 61-year-old father at their Leelanau Township home, causing injuries to his father’s face.

When police arrived, the father told them that Southbird had been fighting with his 22-year-old brother. When he tried to break up the fight, Southbird hit him in the face, reports stated.

He was arrested on the domestic assault charge, as well as for a probation violation.

Southbird was convicted of domestic violence on two prior occasions. A third conviction could net him up to five years in prison and fines of up to $5,000.

His next court date has not yet been set.
