Women invited to join in skiing

Gals, strap on your cross-country skis, your snowshoes or your hiking boots and make some new friends at 10 a.m. every Friday morning with the Women’s Hiking Group, aka ‘Walky Talkies. The group has been gathering at the same time for years, with this week’s hike taking them to the DeYoung Natural Area on East Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township. There are no lunch plans this week, but potlucks and outings at local restaurants are regulars for the group.

Flip those cakes for community good

Pancakes, pancakes and more pancakes will be served up by the Cedar/ Maple City Lions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Lions Community Building in Maple City next to the Kasson Township Park. Cost is $9 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 years old, with kids 5 and under eating for free. Waffles, omelets to order, sausage, scrambled eggs and more are also on the menu. Funds pay for scholarships and vision assistance.

Higher sewer rates on agenda

The Leland Township Board and Sewer has set a special meeting for 1 p.m. Tuesday with the intent to increase sewer rates to fund several municipal wastewater repair projects in the coming year. One of those projects is to unplug a blocked pipeline that runs under the Leland River, with repairs estimated at $288,000. The meeting will be held at the Leland Township Office in Lake Leelanau.
