Spring ahead and prepare to crawl

By BILL THOMPSON

Don’t you just love this time of year? Watching a Robin scamper through the snow and sliding on an icy branch? Ahh, almost spring.

Fisher folk, it’s almost the time to get your shanties off of the ice. From the looks of little Glen Lake, if you haven’t got them off forget it. You may have to go fishing for your shanty when you put your boat in. The DNR will not be happy.

Sunday, March 12, is a fine time to Spring Ahead.

The results that you’ve all been waiting for of the Soup Cook Off in Empire on Presidents Weekend. In first place with his beefy cream and mushroom soup, eight-year-old Joel Martin. In second place with his beef and homemade noodles soup, much older than 9-years-old Sam Barr. And in thirdplace with her chicken tortilla soup, Cindy Blakeslee. Because I’m not crazy, nothing about her age. Congratulations to all three.

Because local basketball is still going strong, I’m not going to say anything or write anything until later because I don’t want to jinx a team.

Two weeks until the ever popular pub crawls and the more-than-ever popular first day of spring.

Happy birthday wishes to Mel Martin, Stan Pykosz, Carlotta Meehan, Racquel Jackson, and to the little girl with my favorite name, Glen Lake Grauman.

I don’t normally get political in this little ditty, but with what is going on around us I’m reminded of what a founder and former statesman said: “A government that is big enough to give you everything that you want is also big enough to take everything that you have.” Be careful of what you wish for.

And be careful out there, even though the sun is out more than it has been. Be safe.
