A week for drunk driving and rollovers

Three arrests and two rollover accidents kept Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies busy over the weekend.

A 25-year-old Traverse City woman was arrested a little after midnight on Saturday after being stopped on M-72 near Gray Road in Elmwood Township for failing to dim the headlights on her 2011 black Ford.

Upon contact, the deputy suspected she had consumed alcohol, with an investigation showing that she was intoxicated, according to a police report.

The driver was arrested for drunken driving and lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

At about 4 a.m. Saturday, a 42-yearold Traverse City man was arrested for drunken driving, second offense, after a deputy found his 2014 blue Mitsubishi stuck in a snowbank on the side of South Lake Leelanau Drive near Birch Point Road.

The driver had been drinking and could not remember how he had gotten stuck in the snowbank, a police report stated.

An investigation determined he was intoxicated. He was arrested and lodged in jail.

At about 7:50 a.m. Saturday, deputies and Elmwood fire and rescue personnel responded to a rollover accident on South Lake Leelanau Drive near Fouch Road.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a 1997 Ford Ranger pick-up off the east side of the road.

An investigation determined the driver, a 19-year-old woman from Suttons Bay, was southbound on South Lake Leelanau Drive when she lost control of her truck, which slid off the road and rolled over.

Neither the driver nor her 16-year-old passenger were injured.

The 19-year-old was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.

A 30-year-old Bingham Township resident was arrested at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday after a deputy clocked a 1989 GMC going 76 mph along M-22 near Pathfinder School.

The driver was arrested for drunken driving and lodged in jail.

Deputies and Suttons Bay-Bingham rescue personnel responded to a rollover accident at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday on South Elm Valley Road near South Center Highway.

Emergency workers found a 2006 Ford Explorer off the road and rolled over.

An investigation determined the driver, a 42-year-old woman from Suttons Bay, was heading south on South Elm Valley Road when she lost control of her vehicle. The Ford slid out of control off the east side of the road and rolled over.

The driver received minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital.

She was, however, ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.

A 30-year-old Suttons Bay man was arrested for ‘super’ drunken driving Thursday after a patrol deputy spotted him driving erratically in Suttons Bay Village.

The 30-year-old, who was driving a 2008 Pontiac, was pulled over at about 11:45 p.m. last Thursday. After talking with the man, a deputy determined that he had been drinking, a report said.

An investigation showed the man had a high blood alcohol level; he was arrested and lodged in jail.

About an hour later, just before 1 p.m. on Friday, deputies arrested a 50-yearold man for drunken driving after responding to a dispute between a husband and wife at a home on East Silver Leaf Farm Road in Suttons Bay Township.

Deputies learned that the 50-year-old had left the home in a 2004 Ford pickup, though he returned during the investigation. Deputies determined he was intoxicated, a report said.

The man was arrested for drunken driving and was lodged in jail.

The original dispute was determined to be a verbal altercation and no law enforcement action was taken.

A 33-year old Maple City man was arrested for possession of marijuana after being stopped for speeding at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday in Kasson Township.

A deputy working stationary radar stopped a silver vehicle for speeding on Co. Rd. 669 near Bloswick Road. The deputy contacted the 33-year-old driver and learned he was driving on a suspended driver’s license, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy also smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, the report said. A search of the man allegedly turned up a small amount of marijuana.

The man was arrested for possession of marijuana and for driving on a suspended license, second offense.

He was taken to jail.

A 56-year-old Traverse City man was arrested Tuesday after a single vehicle crash on East Cherry Bend Road near East Breithaupt Road in Elmwood Towship.

At about 3 p.m., deputies and Elmwood Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a 2004 Dodge pick-up truck that had left the road. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the 56-yearold driver uninjured, a report said.

Witnesses told deputies they had observed the pick-up running a stop sign coming off of Strang Road onto Cherry Bend Road, then striking a garbage can before traveling off the road, the report said.

Deputies determined the driver was intoxicated, the report said.

The driver was arrested for felony drunken driving and for driving on a suspended license. According to the report, the driver has four previous convictions for drunken driving, as well as prior convictions for driving on a suspended license.

He was lodged in jail.
