Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Mark Leugers

ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP resident Mark Leugers and his granddaughter, who attends preschool in Traverse City. ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP resident Mark Leugers and his granddaughter, who attends preschool in Traverse City. Name: Mark Leugers

Town or township of residence: Elmwood Township

Resident of county since: 1989. I moved here from Boulder, Colo. My family has had a cottage on Lake Leelanau since 1935.

Age and birthplace: 56, and I was born in Cincinnati.

Occupation: Cabinet installations with my own company, Leugers Custom Installation.

Marital status: Married to Lori. She has her own consulting business with schools and hospitals. We’ve been married since 1983, with two grown children and three grandchildren.

You live in Leelanau County because: It’s the most beautiful place I know.

Last good movie you saw: “Eagle Huntress,” which I saw with my 5-year-old granddaughter, Mireya. She’s in preschool right now in Traverse.

Last good book you read: Sam Harris’ “Letters for a Christian Nation.” It dispels some myths about Christianity.

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: Warren Buffett, and not because of his money but because of his philanthropy. I read something recently about him and I was very impressed. Down to earth. Humble. Giving away all his money.

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: Successful marriage, kids and grandkids, so I guess family.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: Living. I’m hoping to see my grandchildren grow up.

Things you lose sleep over: My health.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: I know affordable housing is one that’s come up a lot. We do have rentals and we try to keep the rent reasonable to attract more young people.

Favorite dessert: My rhubarb pie. I like it tart, and I don’t like it with ice cream. Just the rhubarb.

Are you a coffee drinker: No. I use to be a diet Mountain Dew fanatic, but my sister convinced me it’s not good for me. When I gave that up, I pretty much gave up caffeine.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: Sunset skiing on Cedar Lake.

If you have more time, you would: Do more woodworking. I carve pieces and put together some metal sculptures, and stonework patterns. I did a lizard as a walkway. So more artwork.

The words that best describe you are: Can we say, ah. My daughter would say ah. I’m demanding, fun loving, and I’m always on the go.
