Strongman looks to raise funds for Leelanau Christian Neighbors

A Bingham Township man is calling on all Leelanau County “strongmen” to raise a bar and raise money for a local food pantry next month.

Stan Silverman, 71, has challenged the owners of the Fresh Coast Fitness gym in Traverse City to a modified power-lifting contest on April Fool’s Day. The goal is to get pledges per pound lifted, with all funds benefiting Father Fred and Leelanau Christian Neighbors.

The contest doesn’t stop there. Silverman hopes to see power lifters in the county pursue similar challenges and garner per-pound pledges for the cause through the month of April. All are welcome to pledge or participate.

“You can do it in your basement,” said Silverman, who hopes to lift more than 700 pounds combined. “This is all about the honor system. We’re not competing for national trophies.”

The challenge features three basic lifts: dead lift, squat and bench press. Measures can be taken to modify competitions to account for age differences.

He said he’d like to see schools challenge schools, businesses challenge businesses and people challenge people. Anyone interested is encouraged to email him at bayvalley@aol.com.

“It’d just be fun to get people from all over,” Silverman said. “We’re starting real small this year but I’m just hoping to get the energy started.”
