Comparing the cost of municipal water

The average American family of four uses about 400 gallons per day, or 12,000 gallons per month, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Shown are comparisons of residential water rates in Leelanau County for those four communities that have municipal water systems, as well as a sampling of rates from five other northern Michigan communities.

All rates are for a 5/8-inch meter, the most common size residential meter used.

Based on average usage, here is what a family of four in each community pays for water per month:

ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP*

Cost — $38.50 ($47.50 under proposed rate)

Ready to serve fee — $21 per month, includes first 600 cubic feet (4,500 gallons) of water. (Fee likely to increase to $25 on May 1.)

Usage charge — Over 600 cubic feet billed at $1.75 per 750 gallons. (Rate likely to increase to $2.65/750 gallons May 1.)

*System is owned by Grand Traverse County, which does billing for the township.

Rates are set by the township.

EMPIRE VILLAGE

Cost — $43.16

Ready to serve fee — $46.68 per quarter

Usage charge — $2.30 per 1,000 gallons

NORTHPORT VILLAGE

Cost — $18*

Ready to serve fee — None

Usage Charge — Flat rate of $30 for up to 4,500 gallons; $1.40 per 1,000 gallons over minimum.

*Northport property owners also pay a 2-mill tax levy per year that is dedicated to the water system.

SUTTONS BAY VILLAGE

Cost — $53.98

Ready to serve fee — $9.58 per month

Capital charge — $9 per month

Usage Charge — $2.95 per 1,000 gallons

PETOSKEY

Cost — $43.36

Ready to serve fee — $20.16 per month

Usage Charge — $1.45 per CCF (750 gallons)

FRANKFORT

Cost — $37.48

Ready to serve fee — $10.24 per month

Usage Charge — $2.27 per 1,000 gallons

GRAYLING

Cost — $44.04

Administration fee — $9.32 per quarter

Usage charge — $3.67 per 1,000 gallons

MANISTEE

Cost — $37.97

Ready to serve fee — $4.01 per month

Usage charge — $2.83 per 1,000 gallons

CADILLAC

Cost — $25.77

Ready to serve fee — $6.39 per month
