Business students shine downstate, rewarded with trip to Sunshine State

Students from Lake Leelanau St. Mary and Suttons Bay will head to the Business Professionals of America National Conference May 10-14 in Orlando after strong showings at the state leadership conference.

Seven students collectively from the two schools qualified for the national conference after competition over the weekend in Grand Rapids.

Qualifying seniors include Braydon Tiffany from Suttons Bay, who was second in personal computer troubleshooting and servicing.

Also earning second place was Ryan Popp of St. Mary, who competed in advance spreadsheet applications.

Haley Tarsa, another St. Mary senior, was a “Torch” award recipient and leadership academy member.

In addition to these seniors is St. Mary sophomore and first-time state qualifier Shannon Popp, who earned a first in fundamental word processing.

Three St. Mary middle school students also qualified for the national conference in their respective category. They are Joshua Van Thomme, Ciara Glynn and Cece Schaub.

An honorable mention went to Suttons Bay’s Parliamentary Procedures team of Kelsey Pease, Alex Dejong, Jack Pasche, Thomas Hursey, Derek Piglowski, Erik Halvorsen, Otto Mork and Cal Gaudard.

St. Mary’s Nicole Wittman was fourth in human source management. She was also part of the financial analyst team that finished fourth. Joining her on the team were Ryan Popp, Shawn Grant, and Micah Thoreson.

Emily Rice was seventh in intermediate word processing.
