Nine Leelanau County boys earn All-Northwest Conference honors

Boys basketball teams in the Northwest Conference combined to win three district championships and one regional title this winter—and more trophies may be in store in 2018.

That’s because 12 of the 13 players named to All-Northwest Conference first and second teams last week will be back next season, including all six members of the first team.

Eleven of those 13 players were juniors. Kingsley forward Nathan Schaar, a second-team honoree, was the lone senior named to either team.

First-team honorees were Denver Cade and Austin Harris of Buckley, Jaylon Rogers of Frankfort, sophomore Xander Okerlund of Glen Lake, Garett Miller of Leland, and Thomas Hursey of Suttons Bay.

Second-team plaudits went to Schaar, Devin Burkhart of Benzie Central, Joe Weber of Buckley, Griffin Kelly and Matt Loney of Frankfort, Cade Peterson of Glen Lake, and Jacob Mauntler of Onekama.

Fourteen players, including five players from Leelanau County teams, received an honorable mention: Nick Baesch and Brian Kaczanowski of Benzie Central; Ridge Beeman of Buckley; Nick Apsey and Mike Skipski of Glen Lake; Tristan Fessenden and Dylan Reno of Kingsley; Timmy LeVeque of Leland; Ethan Humphries and Garrett Quiggin of Mesick; Joe McCarthy and Jeremiah Torrey of Onekama; and Evan Busby and Garrett Shananaquet of Suttons Bay.
