Mikowski pleads not guilty to causing accident while drunk

MIKOWSKI MIKOWSKI A 59-year-old Maple City man pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of drunken driving causing serious injury at his 13th Circuit Court arraignment held Tuesday.

If convicted, Dwayne A. Mikowski, 8967 S. Maple Road, will be sentenced as a habitual offender.

Mikowski is accused of striking 70-year-old Thomas M. Mallery of Cedar with his vehicle while he was crossing South Lake Shore Drive to pick up his mail, according to reports from 86th District Court.

Mikowski is currently free on a 10 percent, $10,000 bond.

The accident took place near the intersection of Laskey Road in Centerville Township. An investigation determined that Mikowski had been northbound on South Lake Shore Drive and was rounding a curve near Laskey Road when he came upon Mallery crossing the road, according to reports.

Mikowski allegedly veered over the centerline and struck Mallery. When deputies arrived, they found a 2005 Pontiac off the road, with Mallery on the ground next to the vehicle, reports said.

After the accident Mikowski had a PBT result of .159, according to reports.

Mikowski has two prior convictions for drunken driving in 1992 and 2000 in Leelanau County, and in 2011 in Grand Traverse County.

The current charge carries a sentence of up to five years in prison; that sentence could be increased under habitual offender sentencing guidelines.
