All aboard for bus trip along historic train routes

Dave Taghon, director of the Empire Heritage Museum, and Roger Griner of the Benzie Area Historical Museum will lead bus a tour of The Empire and Southeastern Railroad through Honor, Empire, and Empire Junction.

Leelanau and Benzie counties were home to many railroad lines in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The rails are no longer in place but the old railroad grades allow the group to follow the route used by trains to steam from one small town to another.

The tour will include a stop at the Empire Museum to view its collection of historical materials and a discussion of the towns of Aral and Edgewater.

There is also a lunch stop planned at the Friendly Tavern in Empire.

The bus tour will leave from the Benzie Area Historical Museum at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, and return there at 3 p.m. The cost is $50 per person until April 20, when it will increases to $65. The price includes everything except a tip for the bus driver.
