Second 8-man division added to football playoffs

As part of an effort to accommodate an increasing number of 8-man football programs across the state, the Representative Council of the MHSAA at its annual winter meeting in East Lansing on March 24 approved the addition of a second division to the 8-man football playoffs.

Sixty Class D schools will compete in 8-man football this fall which, according to the MHSAA, is a 20 percent increase in tournament-eligible programs since last season (only Class D schools are eligible for the tournament). The council voted to expand the 8-man tournament to two four-week, 16-team brackets and divide teams based on enrollment. The tournaments will take place before Thanksgiving.

Qualification criteria, enrollment limits and MHSAA finals venues will be discussed at the council’s spring meeting, which is slated May 7-8.
