Don’t stall completion of Heritage Trail

To the Editor:

How unfortunate that the Little Traverse Lake Property Owners Association is stalling the finishing of the Heritage Trail. Trails are such a wonderful asset to a community. They provide an opportunity to ride a bike, run, walk, or commute safely away from traffic. The Heritage Trail is an absolute gem for Leelanau County.

Our area has promoted tourism for jobs and the trail adds appeal for those who visit. Sections of the trail which have been completed are absolutely beautiful with minimum impact to the forest. Years ago there was resistance to the completion of the Leelanau Trail from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. Now those individuals living adjacent to the trail who were opposed, find their concerns were unfounded. They use the trail regularly.

As a society we are encouraged to exercise and keep active for health benefits. Trails provide an easy and enjoyable way to accomplish this, walking or riding with family, grandchildren, and friends. With the appeal recently filed by the Little Traverse Lake Homeowners Association, fundraising has stopped.

As avid cyclists we are saddened to know that the completion of the trail has been delayed. We hope that this issue can be resolved quickly so that the trail can be completed in the near future. All will benefit. Thank you.
