Texas fugitive had long rap sheet


CAUDILLO CAUDILLO The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office on Monday arrested a fugitive wanted out of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office in Texas during a traffic stop in Suttons Bay Village.

Rocky Caudillo, 44, of Texas, was arrested after deputies at about 5:45 p.m. received a ‘be on the lookout’ warning for a 2005 silver Cadillac with a Texas license plate traveling on M-204 near Herman Road.

The vehicle was reported to have a possibly intoxicated driver, according to the report.

A deputy located the vehicle on St. Mary’s Street near Fourth Street in Suttons Bay.

Deputies learned from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) that Caudillo was wanted in Ellis County, Texas, for alleged failure to comply with sex offender registration requirements, a felony, the report said.

The warrant was for full extradition with a $15,000 bond.

Caudillo has multiple pending warrants out of Ellis County with an extensive criminal history dating back to 1996 with charges of burglary, assault, theft, possession, unauthorized use of a vehicle, promotion of prostitution, manufacture/delivery of an illegal substance and indecency with child sexual contact, the report said.

A 29-year-old passenger in Caudillo’s vehicle, who is also from Texas, was arrested for transporting open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, the report said.

The passenger was also lodged in jail.

A spider is being blamed for causing a single car crash on Sunday when a driver veered off the road and into some trees in Centerville Township, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies and Cedar Area Fire and Rescue responded at about 9:40 a.m. to the accident on South Good Harbor Trail near Gatzke Road. They found a 2005 GMC Envoy off the east side of the road, the report said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Grawn man, told deputies he was heading north on South Good Harbor Trail when he was distracted by a spider on the visor above his head.

The vehicle traveled into the ditch and through heavy brush before coming to rest against some trees.

The man was uninjured, the report said.

His passenger, a 29-year-old Grawn woman, sustained an injury to her wrist, the report said. She was treated at the scene by Cedar rescue personnel.

A 38-year-old Lake Ann man was arrested for felony drunken driving after an alert citizen called 9-1-1 to report seeing a black pick-up truck driving erratically on South Lake Leelanau Drive in Bingham Township, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

The citizen called at about noon last Thursday after spotting the 2010 Ford truck swerving all over the road while heading south on Lake Leelanau Drive near Bingham Road, the report said.

A deputy near the area pulled over to the shoulder of the road. A short time later the pick-up truck passed the deputy, allegedly nearly sideswiping the stopped patrol vehicle, the report said.

The deputy made a traffic stop and reported that the driver displayed obvious signs of impairment. He was placed under arrest for suspicion of drunken driving, the report said.

The man has two previous convictions for drunken driving and one conviction for leaving the scene of a traffic crash where alcohol was involved, according to the report.

He was lodged in jail.

A 40-year-old Cedar woman was arrested last Thursday after being seen driving erratically near the Village of Cedar, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

At a little after midnight, a deputy patrolling the area observed a 2013 black Ford SUV weaving over the center line, the report said.

A traffic stop was made, with the deputy allegedly detecting the smell of alcohol. The woman admitted she had been drinking, the report said. She was arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle intoxicated and lodged in jail.
