Man charged with choking his girlfriend, a felony

WAINWRIGHT WAINWRIGHT A 39-year-old Suttons Bay Township man was video arraigned last Thursday in 86th District Court on felony assault charges after an incident that took place on May 9, according to reports from District Court and from the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan A. Wainwright, of 12199 E. Norris Road, is currently being held in the Leelanau County Jail on a $25,000 10 percent bond.

He was arraigned on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, a felony, and a misdemeanor domestic assault.

The charges stemmed from an incident that took place at about 2 p.m., when deputies responded to Wainwright’s East Norris Road home after a 30-yearold woman called to report a domestic assault in progress, according to reports.

The woman told deputies that an argument had taken place between her and Wainwright, who she said was her boyfriend, reports said. During the argument, Wainwright allegedly grabbed her and threw her down onto a bed and choked her, reports said.

The woman had visible injuries to her neck and shoulders, reports said.

Wainwright was arrested and lodged in jail.

Should he post bond, Wainwright is not to have any contact with his victim or to go to the residence.

Wainwright is requesting a courtappointed attorney. His probable cause conference has been set for next Wednesday, May 24, and a preliminary examination on the charges for May 30.
