Farmers invited to migrant meeting

To the Editor:

As spring unfolds and summer approaches there are questions in the minds of local growers: will they have sufficient migrant help to harvest their crops? Or will the fear of deportment keep them away?

Migrant labor contributes signifi- cantly to the economic growth and development in Benzie, and surrounding counties. But migrants now face troubling challenges and concerns. How will those challenges and concerns, and the fears that accompanies them, affect the harvesting of crops here in Northern Lower Michigan? And how can we, as compassionate and caring residents, support and protect our migrant families?

On Tuesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m., the Concerned Citizens of Benzie County will present a panel discussion addressing those, and many other, questions and concerns. We invite and urge the public to attend and join in on the discussion. The forum will be held at Grow Benzie, on M-115, between Benzonia and Frankfort. There is no charge to attend.
