Festival focuses on asparagus

Get your asparagus on at several events being held this weekend as part of the Empire Asparagus Festival. The fun starts on Friday with a pig roast and live music and wraps up on Sunday with a Zonta Club breakfast at the Empire Township Hall. See coverage in Section Two.

Pull and pitch at 3 workbees

Volunteers are needed for several workbees taking place this week. Garlic mustard pullers are needed from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday and from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday at Clay Cliffs Natural Area off M-22 north of Leland. Bring drinking water and gloves. And from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday the Discovery Center & Pier in Greilickville is looking for people to paint, plant, prune and pitch a tent. Wear old clothes and bring gloves and tools.

Plow Day at Bingham farm

Head to the Rex Dobson Ruby Ellen Farm from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for Plow Day, which will be held in partnership with the Northwest Michigan Draft, Horse & Mule Association. Bring the kids for horse-drawn wagon rides, demonstrations and displays. The museum will be open and food and drinks will be offered by the Dusty Trails 4-H Club. The event is free.
