Coaches and support runners joining the girls totaled about 800 in number.

This year was the 16th with Therese Larson at the helm. Larson brought the nonprofit to Leelanau County in 2001.

Now, schools from eight counties take part in the program, which combines 5K training with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills and make healthy decisions.

Frank’s medal came on the uneven bars, where she scored a 9.425. In addition, she won fourth place for her beam routine and captured eighth place allaround. Her bars score was enough to propel the Level 4 Grand Traverse Bay gymnastics team to a fourth-place team finish all around.

In all, gymnasts won 10 gold-medal state championships, 15 second-place silver medals, and seven third-place bronze medals.

Michigan is one of five states in USA Gymnastics’ Junior Olympic Region 5, generally considered to be the strongest in the nation.
