Suttons Bay duo shines in Traverse City tuneup

Photo: Ron Kramer Christian Holmes and Alauna Oskaboose represented Suttons Bay with pride on Tuesday while competing for regional bragging rights in the annual Record-Eagle Honor Roll meet at Traverse City Central.

Holmes and Oskaboose led a group of 31 Leelanau County track athletes by snatching up a pair of first-place finishes in the 300-meter hurdles and discus events, respectively. Holmes outpaced Christian Turner of Grand Traverse Academy by .52 seconds with a time of 41.91 while Oskaboose topped Manon Lutzke of Benzie by more than 3 feet with a season-record toss of 111 feet and 3 inches.

Glen Lake, Suttons Bay, Grand Traverse Academy and Benzie were among the 15 area schools with qualified athletes at the meet. The others were Central Lake, Elk Rapids, Forest Area, Frankfort, Kalkaska, Kingsley, Mancelona, North Central Academy, Traverse City Central, Traverse City St. Francis, and Traverse City West.

Leelanau County athletes placed in the following events on the girls side: 400 meters: 8. Savannah Peplinski (Glen Lake) 1:04.02; 1,600 meters: 6. Hanna Grant (Suttons Bay) 5:30.53; 3,200 meters: 3. Grant (Suttons Bay) 12:00.40; 4x100 relay: 2. Sam Garvin, Lily Ewing, Kali Schettek, Ivy Hansen (Glen Lake) 53.66; 4x200 relay: 4. Garvin, Ewing, Schettek, Madison Leader (Glen Lake) 1:54.06; 4x400 relay: 7. Corrine Krumlauf, Alayna Torrey, Audrey Alflen, Grace McKillip (Suttons Bay) 4:47.01; Discus: 1. Oskaboose (Suttons Bay) 111 feet, 3 inches; 13. Anya Woods (Suttons Bay) 76 feet, 7 inches.

County boys, meanwhile, placed in the following 12 events: 100 meters: 7. Nick Rice (Glen Lake) 11.67; 110- meter hurdles: 5. Holmes (Suttons Bay) 15.81; 300-meter hurdles: 1. Qualified county athletes will compete in the MHSAA LP Division 4 state finals at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
