Belated thanks to D-Day veterans

I have to start with an apology to all the veterans and those now serving for failing last week to mention D-Day and Normandy. So many lives lost by heroes and patriots who should be honored. These are the people who have made and make our country great. I’m sorry.

Things seem to be picking up in the area with more people around. Now that most of the graduation parties are over things can get down to whatever normal is in the summer here.

Speaking of graduation parties, a big thank you to the Empire Lions Club for use of their tent for a very personal graduation party. The party went off without a hitch and the tent blew down the next day. Everything turned out great. We miss the Illinois contingent.

The Challenge appeared to have gone off well and wasn’t too challenging to the people not in the race. Congratulations to those of you who started and finished and congratulations to those who just started, although I think most finished.

The next race will be Saturday with the Glen Arbor Solstice Half Marathon and 5K. This race is mostly in and around the Big Glen and Glen Arbor.

Sincere condolences to the many friends and family of Lanny Sterling.

The Glen Arbor Women’s Club had their spring dinner at the Leland Lodge this past week and I’m certain that everybody enjoyed the evening, dinner and libation.

A lot of people coming and going this time of year and in the winter in our area, and I am sure that everyone notices that I don’t mention that in this column. If someone wants me to tell everyone that they’re gone just let me know, but I don’t think it’s my place to announce that there is going to be an empty house for two weeks or three weeks of winter because most of them are in the woods with few close neighbors. So I don’t.

Do you like to sing? Do you want to make some beautiful music with other, like-minded lovers of the human voice? Then join Summer Singers, an enthusiastic, all-volunteer group of mixed voices who get together for the love of singing. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church. All voices are welcomed.

The Summer Singers, part of the Manitou Music Festival, will perform a concert Aug. 15 at the church under the direction of Dana Allen. For more information please call Cindy Graves at (248) 797-9325.

Happy Birthday wishes to Lisa Edwards, Chris Reid (also a recent new father), Bill Freeman, Ann Noffsinger and Suzanne Ferguson.

Happy Anniversary wishes to Lina and Rich Robertson, Suzanne and Gerald Ferguson and a special wedding anniversary wish for 65 years to Larry and Marilyn Rank. Congratulations to all.

Get well wishes to Grace Johnson.

I know I keep saying this, but I’m confident the weather will get better. There have been more bear sightings, so watch your step in the woods and watch where you’re stepping in the woods.

Be careful, be happy, be kind, have fun.
