Litany of charges for RV driver

The suspect in the theft of a motorhome and attempted theft of golf carts early in the morning of June 6 has been identified as 31-year-old Jason Ford of Traverse City.

Ford was arraigned last Wednesday, June 7, on a litany of charges. Leelanau County Sheriff’s Deputies believe he was attempting to steal two golf carts from Sugar Loaf The Old Course. Ford was driving the stolen motor home with a trailer at the time, police reports state.

He was arraigned for possession of burglary tools; three counts of receiving and concealing stolen property; operating while intoxicated, third offense; possession of a firearm by a felon; felony firearm; possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle; and fourth offense, habitual offender.

Ford’s bond was set at $500,000 cash.

In other law enforcement developments, deputies made two arrests last Thursday, June 8.

In the first instance, the Secondary Road Patrol deputy stopped a 2011 white Chevrolet SUV for speeding on Bugai Road near Longbranch Circle in Elmwood Township at 1:28 p.m. The driver of the vehicle was identified as an 18-year-old man from Lake Ann who had a suspended license and a previous conviction for the same offense. He was arrested and lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

The second arrest was made at 3:09 p.m. when deputies responded to a complaint of fraud at a residence on South Cedar Brook Court in Elmwood Township. Deputies spoke with a 37-year-old man who had an outstanding warrant out of 13th Circuit Court for contempt of court for a $10,909 bond. The man was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

An effort Friday by deputies to check on the welfare of a 53-year-old man led to his arrest.

At 9:06 p.m., deputies responded to the 6200 block of East Traverse Highway in Solon Township after a person called 911 dispatch to report a man who was texting suicidal statements.

The suspect was gone by the time deputies arrived. They returned later to find the man at home and allegedly intoxicated.

The suspect was arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was transported to Munson Hospital for evaluation. Reports will be forwarded to the Leelanau County Prosecutor for review.
