Halvorsen takes seat on S-B School Board

HALVORSEN HALVORSEN Tim Halvorsen was sworn in as a member of the Suttons Bay Board of Education this week.

Halvorsen took his seat and joined board President Thor Mikesell and trustees Kim Eike, David Buffum and Steve Hall for the regular meeting, which also included the annual budget hearing.

Trustees Jennifer Porter and Jennifer Lewis were absent.

Halvorsen, a Michigan State trooper, was the only applicant to fill a seat vacated by Erik Bahle who resigned just five months into the position.

Bahle, who was elected to a fouryear term in November, was critical of the board’s decision-making and the actions of Superintendent Nelson.

Halvorsen and his wife, longtime Suttons Bay special education teacher Kelly Halvorsen, have two children attending Suttons Bay Public Schools.

Halvorsen’s appointment will run through the next General Election in November 2018 at which time candidates may seek election to serve the two years remaining in Bahle’s unexpired term.

There were no declared School Board candidates on the November 2016 ballot. All four residents seeking positions on the School Board were write-in candidates.
