Steps taken to ramp up math scores in Glen Lake schools

A list of ingredients to improve secondary math scores has been assembled by the Glen Lake Board of Education.

The School Board during its Monday night meeting purchased new curriculum, hired new instructors and agreed to pay for additional professional development instruction to improve standardized test scores.

More than 40 teachers submitted resumes for the two secondary teaching positions. Two women with local ties were hired.

Cathy Kangas will be leaving the Benzie Central High School to teach at the neighboring Glen Lake School District next fall.

Laurie Loncar will be on staff to help ramp up efforts. She was the top candidate for a teaching position at Glen Lake in July 2015, but did not start in the classroom that fall..

Instead, Loncar has been teaching in the Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs, Colo. She has relatives living in the Empire area.

Also approved were the purchase a of new math curriculum-College Preparatory Math and a contract with the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District for professional development instruction zeroing in on mathematics.

“The new curriculum is more in line with Common Core and is problem/ project based and emphasizes critical thinking and mathematics on a deep level,” Superintendent Sander Scott said.

The new teacher hirings were two of several human resources actions taken by the School Board.

The board accepted the resignation of business manager Carol Balhorn and payroll clerk Stephanie Black. The two had a combined for 20 years of service in the district.

Jordan Fehrenbach of Bingham Township had been working for the school in a non-teaching capacity. He has been appointed human resources clerk.

Superintendent Scott said he is meeting this week with candidates to fill Balhorn’s post on an interim basis until the position is filled.

In other human resources business the board:

 Accepted the resignation of middle school teacher Carla Van Farowe- Gipson.

 Designated retired elementary teacher Therese Lichty as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant.

 Hired Madelynn Brown as a substitute teacher assistant.
