Cleveland allows bikers to stop, refresh

A bike ride drew the attention of the Cleveland Township Board at its meeting this month.

The board voted 4-0 to authorize the Michigander Bicycling Tour to stop at the township’s park on Little Traverse Lake on July 18 to provide a rest stop for cyclists.

This month’s meeting was chaired by township Clerk Jan Nowak.

Nowak said the bicycling group has promised to rent additional portable toilets for use at the park and would also pay for cleaning and servicing the township’s portable toilets during the tour.

The Michigander Bicycle Tour will roll through Leland, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Frankfort and Traverse City, July 15-22.

In other action, the board heard from its insurance agent during its brief meeting.

Paul Olson of Municipal Underwriters of Western Michigan appeared at the board’s regular monthly meeting June 13 and said the township’s annual premium will rise only slightly this year, from $6,194 to $6,217. He said coverage will remain identical to what is currently in place.

Olson said the township should also expect to receive a $339 dividend check this year from the insurance company.

The insurance policy provides millions of dollars in liability coverage for the township and each of its officials through the Michigan Townships Participating Plan. The board voted 4-0 to accept the new annual insurance contract, with township supervisor Tim Stein absent.
