Lakeshore, enough on entrance fee hikes

We love you, Lakeshore.

But why do you keep charging more to visit?

It’s nearly a sure thing that park fees will undergo another steep hike on Jan. 1, 2018 — the second in two years. Prior to Jan. 1, 2016, the fee for a weekly pass was $10; the cost was $20 for an annual pass.

The fees are scheduled to increase to $20 and $40 in less than six months.

Those represent 100 percent jumps.

Keep in mind that only about one-third of national parks charge an entrance fee at all.

Is it worth the money to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore? For most folks, sure.

Then again, on a tight budget, fees are nearing a level at which a decision may be required.
