Learn about our Indian heritage

Two programs are scheduled next week to discuss Native American culture.

JoAnne Cook, a former tribal councilor with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, will speak about the history of the Odawa Anishinabek people of the Grand Traverse region at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Leelanau Historical Society in Leland.

Dr. Robert Swierenga will speak next Wednesday, July 26, on Chief Wakazoo’s Ottawa Band. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at the Putnam-Cloud Tower House Museum in Omena.

Help point a way for Empire

The Village of Empire will kick off a community survey at a Planning Commission Master Plan Committee meeting set for 5 p.m. Monday at the Empire Township Hall. Residents are encouraged to take part in the survey, which is designed to help set a future direction for the community. Surveys are available online and at the village office.

Silver anniversary for art exhibition

The 25th annual benefit art exhibition and sale to support the Old Art Building kicks off Friday evening with food, cocktails and a live band.

The Art Leelanau benefit promotes the artwork of more than 80 Leelanau artists, with 40 percent of sales going to the Leelanau Community Cultural Center operating fund.

The opening gala is scheduled from 5:30-9:30 p.m. with music from K Jones and the Benzie Playboys. The show continues through Thursday, July 27.
