GLEN LAKE FRESHMEN Carly Nicholas, left, and Mahrle Siddall await a serve from a pair of Grandville boys Tuesday afternoon during a home scrimmage in Glen Arbor. Leelanau tennis coach Tim Sutherland has a lot to look forward to.

Sutherland said his team — which will include a mix of about 28 athletes from Glen Arbor, The Leelanau School, Leland, St. Mary and Suttons Bay this fall — is loaded with young talent and ready to roll into the 2017 campaign.

He won’t have to wait long, either.

The team will knock out a fifth of its regular-season schedule in the next six days with competition lined up at Ludington tomorrow, Traverse City Central on Monday and Traverse City St. Francis on Wednesday.

“We’re young this year, but you never know,” said Sutherland, who was all smiles at a multi-site scrimmage with visiting Grandville on Tuesday. “I see us back in the state tournament again with this talent and enthusiasm. I’ve got some numbers to work with and talented kids who are competing.”

Most prep teams on the peninsula will begin their seasons by Thursday (see the sports schedule on page 12). The Glen Lake and Suttons Bay football teams will begin their seasons next Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Comprehensive season previews for all Leelanau County fall sports will appear in Section 3 of next week’s Enterprise.
