Balance needed to keep four school districts

School of choice policies were created to foster competition among public school districts.

They’re working in Leelanau County – perhaps too well.

Glen Lake Community Schools has cut off enrollment by out-of-district students, and Leland Public School with its small campus has done same.

Meanwhile, Suttons Bay and Northport public schools have empty classrooms and plenty of unused capacity.

We don’t intend to weigh the reasons for such high rates of transfers. But with Glen Lake and Leland full up with students, the system seems to have reached a pinnacle.

Perhaps we’re stating obvious, but some resemblance of balance will be needed in the future to maintain the county’s four public school districts in their present forms.

And we believe that providing educational choices serve to benefit county students.
