Rain and cloudy skies disappeared just in time on Labor Day for the Leelanau County Democratic Party to hold its annual picnic at Peterson Park in Leelanau Township.

At the event, the former chair of the county’s party organization, Betsy Johnson, was awarded the party’s Viskochil Award for her service. The award is named after the late David Viskochil of Omena, a longtime party leader.

The party’s Labor Award was presented to John Sanchez, “who has spent his life as a labor leader, and is now fighting acute leukemia – the fight of his life,” according to current party chair Gwenne Allgaier.

Democrats who currently serve in elected and appointed offices in Leelanau County were also recognized, with many of them offering brief remarks to a crowd of about 100 at the picnic.
